You’ve probably heard stories like these.
Fifteen years ago, my family of five relocated to San Diego from Florida for my ex-husband’s job. The company paid for our relocation which meant that they had a team of packers pack our entire home (garbage and all!!!) and then drop us in a sea of boxes. I had three young children and knew no one. It took more than a week for us to feel somewhat settled but I never completely unpacked. While trying to entertain my kids, I searched for the Wii. I found the console but never found the remotes. And breaking down the boxes and the paper was a feat in and of itself.

Another scenario: Someone hires movers, gets an estimate, feels good about the plan. Moving day comes and suddenly the number has changed. Their belongings are already loaded and the driver isn’t budging until more money changes hands. It’s called a hostage load and it happens more than people realize. By the time you figure out what’s happening, your options are pretty much zero.
I think about that a lot when people ask me what senior move management actually is, and why it’s different from just calling a moving company.
May is Moving Month and yes, it’s an actual thing!! Spring is when most people make their move, literally. Warmer weather, end of the school year, fresh start energy. But moving is also consistently ranked as one of the most stressful life events a person can go through. Not just stressful like a bad commute. We’re talking top-of-the-list stressful, right alongside divorce and job loss.
In fact the stress of moving often keeps people stuck in a home they no longer want to live in but the idea of packing and unpacking not to mention all the other components is overwhelming for most people.
What senior move management actually is
When you hire a moving company, you’re hiring people to transport your belongings from Point A to Point B. What happens before and after is largely on you.
Senior and specialty move management is a completely different animal. We come in before the truck ever shows up. We help figure out what’s going to the new space, what goes to the family, what gets donated or sold. We measure furniture against the new floor plan because nothing is worse than arriving somewhere with a couch that doesn’t fit through the door. We coordinate with the movers, the donation centers, arrange for the sale of items and when needed, take care of getting your home cleared out for the next owner. On moving day we make sure things land where they’re supposed to land.
Then we help unpack and set up the new space so it actually feels like home. Not boxes stacked against a wall that you’ll live out of for the next three months or boxes taking up garage space. The day you move in, you will almost always be able to park in your garage – unless your garage was filled with “garage stuff” from your last house.
The other thing senior move management handles that nobody talks about is the emotional side. Downsizing is hard. Leaving a home you’ve lived in for thirty years is hard. Going through a parent’s belongings after a loss is really hard. A good move manager has seen all of it and knows how to hold space for that while still getting the job done.
Your PTO is not a moving budget
This is something I feel strongly about. People burn through their paid time off managing moves that don’t have to be this complicated. They take a week off work to pack, fight with a parent about what they should or shouldn’t take, spend two days on hold with the utility company. By the time the move is done, they’re more exhausted than when they started and they’ve got nothing left in the tank.
That time off should be for the trip to visit family. The long weekend at the beach. The vacation you’ve been putting off because life keeps getting in the way.
Investing in specialty move management isn’t a luxury. It’s actually a pretty rational trade. You get your time back, your stress level back, and you get to be excited about what’s next rather than dreading the experience.
Why the NASMM A+ accreditation is worth asking about
Not everyone who offers senior move management services has the training to back it up. The industry has grown fast and the barrier to entry is low. So how do you know who actually knows what they’re doing?
NASMM, the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers, is the professional organization that sets the standard. A+ accreditation means a company has met rigorous requirements, committed to ongoing education, and agreed to operate under a real code of ethics. It’s not automatic and it’s not just a logo you slap on a website.
Silver Linings Transitions is proud to be an A+ Accredited NASMM member. When you’re navigating one of life’s biggest transitions and inviting someone into your home during a vulnerable time, that accountability matters. A lot.
