Starting Over: What Nobody Tells You About Moving Through Divorce

I know what it’s like to pack up a house because a marriage ended. Shortly after I founded Silver Linings Transitions, I went through my own divorce. I moved with three kids and rebuilt my life from scratch. So when a client calls me mid-divorce, overwhelmed and not sure where to start, I’m not just speaking as a move manager. I’m speaking as someone who’s stood exactly where they’re standing.

Divorce splits a household in half. And it usually happens during the hardest emotional stretch of your life. You’re not just deciding what goes in a box, deciding who gets the good couch. You’re deciding what happens to the wedding china. And you’re doing it on a court’s timeline, not on a timeline that actually feels manageable.

This isn’t just a “senior” thing

When our industry, NASMM (the National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers), was founded back in 2002, it was built around helping seniors move out of homes they’d lived in for decades. But that extra “S” for Specialty got added for a reason. Over the years, move managers like me have worked with just as many busy professionals, growing families, and people going through divorce, anyone facing a big move without the time, energy, or bandwidth to do it entirely alone.

If you’re in the middle of a divorce right now, here’s what I want you to know: needing help with this doesn’t mean you can’t handle it. It means you’re handling a lot at once, and this is one piece you’re allowed to hand off.

What we actually do

Divorce is stressful. The move itself doesn’t have to be. Here’s what that looks like in practice, whether you’re in San Diego or the Coachella Valley:

We start with decluttering and downsizing, thoughtful guidance on what to keep, donate, sell, or pass along, without turning every decision into another source of grief. From there, we help with dividing household belongings, using organized inventories and a calm, neutral approach so splitting shared belongings doesn’t become one more battle. If your home is going on the market, we prepare it for sale: decluttering every room, organizing what stays, coordinating donations, and working alongside your Realtor so the house shows well without you carrying that weight alone.

Then comes the move itself. We pack your belongings carefully, coordinate the movers, and oversee every logistical detail, making sure everything arrives safely at both new homes. And once the truck is unloaded, we don’t stop there. We fully unpack and set up both spaces, so each of you can walk into a home that’s organized and ready to live in, not a stack of boxes waiting for energy you don’t have yet.

We also help with the parts people don’t expect: setting up a functional home for kids splitting time between two households, helping you figure out what you actually need versus what you’re keeping out of habit or guilt, and making decisions about shared belongings with someone you may not want to be negotiating with right now. We’ve sat at that table and we know how to keep it calm and moving forward.

A few things I tell every client

Get realistic about your next space before you decide what comes with you. A three-bedroom house full of furniture doesn’t need to become a two-bedroom apartment full of furniture too.

Don’t let guilt make the decision for you. You don’t owe anyone a shrine to a marriage that’s ending. Keep what genuinely matters to you, not what you think you’re supposed to keep.

If there are photos or mementos tied up in shared history, take a picture before you let something go. The memory can stay even after the object doesn’t.

And give yourself permission to grieve the life you thought you’d have, while also building the one that’s actually in front of you. Both things can be true at the same time.

You don’t have to do this alone

Moving during divorce almost always comes with more than physical work. You’re managing legal appointments, financial decisions, parenting schedules, work responsibilities, and a lot of overwhelming emotion, all at the same time. That’s why our clients so often tell us the greatest gift we gave them wasn’t just an organized move. It was peace of mind, knowing someone had the logistics handled so they could focus on rebuilding their life.

Whatever your divorce looks like, amicable, contentious, or somewhere in between, the physical move doesn’t have to be one more thing you white-knuckle through by yourself. That’s exactly why we built our divorce move management services around what people actually need in this moment.

Perfect is the enemy of done. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need somewhere to start, and you don’t have to start alone. Book a free consultation whenever you’re ready.
